Crespi Swim Heads to State Champs

By: Aaron Robinson
In case you hadn't heard, Crespi Swimming came home with some serious hardward from the CIF-SS Division I Finals in Riverside over the weekend. Going into the prelims on Thursday, the Celts had 2 top-seeded swimmers in Hayden Liu (200 IM) and Zac Van Zandt (200 Freestyle), as well as multiple other seeds that would put other swimmers into the finals and consolations on Saturday.
Senior Hayden Liu started the day off with Crespi swimming's first CIF individual championship in 13 years, last achieved by Patrick Simpkins in 2005. Hayden dominated his competitors in the 200 IM, his best event, by more than a second finishing in 1:48.51 setting a new school record in the process. Later on toward the end of the meet, Hayden would go on to finish 2nd in the 100 Backstroke in :49.42 also setting another Crespi school record.

Next up was Sophomore Zac Van Zandt in the 200 Freestyle.  Zac, favored to win this event managed to pull out a 2nd place finish in the time of 1:37.80 setting both varsity and frosh/soph school records. Moving onto the 100 Freestyle, Van Zandt surprised the entire stadium at Clovis West High School by coming up with a victory in epic fashion after being seeded 4th in the event. Finishing in :44.92, Zac would set both varsity and frosh/soph school records again.

In the 500 Freestyle, senior Sergey Ternov finished 4th with a 4:28.30 in an extremely talented heat, going on to swim his best time and securing a varsity school record making him the fastest distance swimmer in Crespi history.

Finally, in a highly anticipated showdown of speed and strength, Crespi's 200 Freestyle Relay consisting of Zac Van Zandt, Hayden Liu, Jack Chen and Sergey Ternov dominated the field in a winning time of 1:22.99 almost a full second over the 2nd place team Los Alamitos. This would also mark three more school records- one for the relay, and two more for Van Zandt (varsity and frosh/soph) as he led off the relay in a blistering :20.94 beating Liu's previous time of :20.97 set last year in 2017.

...and they aren't finished yet!  Look for these boys this coming Friday and Saturday in Fresno as they compete in the CIF State Swimming Championships.  Seedings and results can be found here:
