| Mission Statement |
|
Crespi Carmelite High School, established in Encino, California, in 1959, serves male high school age students who wish to pursue a college preparatory, Christian education in a Catholic environment. Dedicated to excellence and responding to the challenges of education in our time, we offer a holistic model of education emphasizing the spiritual, intellectual, moral, physical and social development of our students.
In the spirit of the Gospel, and the Carmelite Roman-Catholic tradition, the Crespi Community engages the student in three interlocking dimensions: Community, Prayer, and Justice. As Carmelites we seek to build a community which listens and bears witness to the divine plan through the promotion of justice in the service of the whole person. We therefore commit ourselves to the ministry of education governed by the following basic values:
|
- Evangelization
- Academic Excellence
- Holism
- Character Development
|
- Collaboration
- Preparation for Life
- Justice and Peace
- Family
|
These characteristics are emphasized in our guiding philosophy entitled "The Crespi Man" as follows:
|
| |
1. As a lifelong learner the Crespi Man
uses logical, analytical and creative thinking skills;
uses appropriate methodologies, strategies and current technologies to solve problems and extend his knowledge;
speaks, writes and uses other forms of expression accurately, effectively, and creatively;
acquires, interprets, organizes, synthesizes, applies and evaluates knowledge;
applies his learning across the curriculum and to real life situations.
2. As a productive and mature person the Crespi Man
• strives to improve the community;
• understands and participates in the democratic process;
• takes risks in order to grow and claims responsibility for his actions;
• strives to enhance and maintain physical, mental and emotional well being;
• participates in the experience of the Crespi Carmelite Family enabling him to develop the necessary social skills to form lifelong relationships.
3. As a moral and spiritual person the Crespi Man
• models Christ by learning and practicing Gospel values;
• is committed to living an ethical life;
• is involved in service to others and social justice; recognizes and respects the uniqueness, dignity and personal gifts of all people.

| Gurian Philosophy & Support |
During the 2005-2006 school year, teachers at Crespi Carmelite High School participated in training through the Gurian Institute (www.gurianinstitute.com), and by virtue of Crespi's dedication to improving the education of our boys, Crespi Carmelite High School has become a Gurian Model School. As a Gurian Model School, Crespi serves as a point of reference for other schools that want to adopt the brain-based and gender-specific teaching awareness taught through the Gurian Institute.
Over the week of July 11 to July 16 of 2006, teachers Brian Sheehan and Alan Swaney worked with the founder of the Gurian Institute, Michael Gurian, the Director of the Training Division of the Gurian Institute, Kathy Stevens, and other Gurian trainers, and now Crespi has an on-campus team of Gurian trainers in Mr. Sheehan, Mr. Swaney, and Mr. Rob Kodama, the Crespi Director of Admissions & Marketing. As certified trainers, these men will be offering workshops and resources for Crespi teachers to continue implementing Gurian strategies to enhance the educational experience of the Crespi Men. Furthermore, the Gurian team will be visiting other schools in California and around the nation to explain the benefits of using brain-based research and teaching strategies in the classroom.
The faculty at Crespi Carmelite High School has shown a clear dedication to education of young men, and with the support of the Gurian Institute, Crespi will continue to offer an exceptional college preparatory education. By appealing to the spatial-mechanical nature of the male brain and using teaching methods proven to help boys succeed, teachers at Crespi prove their commitment to the physical, educational, and spiritual growth of their students. While the image of a classroom resounding with classical music and the chatter of students walking around engaged in conversation may not be consistent with traditional ideas of education, the Gurian Institute and Crespi Carmelite High School understand boys need a little more than the average lecture to truly become Crespi Men.
